Vanessa: Welcome along to another Motorholme TV interview, December 2011, and we’re going to be talking today to Joe Kay. And Joe, we join you as you’re preparing to head off to where?
Joe: Well I’m off to the French Alps to go snowboarding with my friends and my girlfriend.
Vanessa: Fantastic.
Joe: So there’s a bit of a convoy going, my girlfriend and I in our little Flash 04 here and there are four other vans going and we can’t wait.
Vanessa: And this is something you’ve done for several years now isn’t it?
Joe: Yeah I think it’s going to be the eleventh year we’ve gone now and my friends and I started doing it when we were at university and we didn’t have much money and we were really roughing it then. As we’ve sort of got betters job we’ve got better vans and now we go in comfort.
Vanessa: Fantastic. So some people say you’re mad to go off in the winter in a motorhome, but are you comfortable in the van?
Joe: Oh yeah, I mean it’s like a flat on wheels, it really is. You know – heat, light, showers, there’s nothing else you need and we can move around. If the snow’s no good in one place we go somewhere else so it’s fine.
Vanessa: That’s the flexibility of being in a van isn’t it? That you can go wherever snow is.
Joe: Yeah that’s it and you don’t have to worry about flights going wrong or anything like that. No flights, trains or stops, we put a pair of snow chains on the campervan and we just roll straight through and we can get anywhere, it’s brilliant.
Vanessa: And it’s worth mentioning in France that they’re motorhome friendly and you’re actually going out to a free camping area that’s got fantastic views.
Joe: Yeah pretty much every French resort has got somewhere free where you can put a motorhome. You can’t take caravans there, but you can take motorhomes. There’s no electricity but we take a generator and there’s places to put the waste. It’s really set up and the French and Europeans in general are really motorhome friendly, much more so than in Britain.
Vanessa: Nick and I like to say that the holiday starts when you turn the keys in the ignition, but I almost feel you’re in holiday mode now.
Joe: Yeah I’m already excited. Yeah I finished work yesterday and we’ve got Christmas coming up, packing the van and I’m already excited. The trip down there people think it’s going to be a real nightmare. It’s not, we do it in a day, the ferry’s nice and then we cruise down. It’s much easier driving in a motorhome than it is in a car; it’s just got all that space and we just take it easy, go down a couple hours, stop and have a cup of tea. It’s brilliant and everything’s with us.
Vanessa: And logistically you’ve got storage in the garage for all your snowboarding stuff and you find that this works really well just you and your girlfriend and you’ve got everything you need in the van to enjoy your holiday.
Joe: Ah definitely, in fact more so because my friends and I are quite serious about our snowboarding and we’ve got the one board here, but I’m actually going to take about three or four out there. You know you start putting that onto a flight and suddenly the costs gone up. I’ve got so much kit to take with me, this way I’m even going to take fancy dress for a party so you can take anything you want.
Vanessa: Oh brilliant!
Joe: So yeah I’m going to take everything.
Vanessa: And there’s quite a gang of you going as well isn’t there so it sounds like it’s going to be a very fun social occasion.
Joe: Oh yeah I can’t wait. I look forward to this all year and it’s going to be really good fun. Good parties in the evenings and it’s just fun being altogether on the campsite together. It’s a bit of an adventure, heavy snowfall is interesting and the van’s all set up with a couple feet of snow on the top, but digging them out is part of the fun, we love it.
Vanessa: Brilliant. Now you’re actually part of the Motorhome “Invest” Scheme as well and you joined that two months ago. Why did you decide to get involved with it?
Joe: Yeah. Well I was looking at buying a motorhome to actually come out away and do this, but I only really only was looking at doing it for a couple of weeks in the winter and so it made sense to me that someone else was going to use the van the rest of the year. I get to use this for a couple of weeks in the winter and it’s just costing me the insurance. It’s a fantastic deal and I’m actually making money out of it rather than it costing me a load of money so I think it’s fantastic.
Vanessa: Fantastic. Well thank you for talking to us and we you a very happy holiday in the van –
Joe: No problem.
Vanessa: And you’ve very kindly offered to do a video diary for us haven’t you?
Joe: Yeah, well that’s it so you can see the carnage as it unfolds and we’ll get some snowboarding shots in there for you and it should be a lot of fun.
Vanessa: Alright well thank you Joe and do watch out for Joe’s video diary which will be appearing on Motorholme TV in the not too distant future and hopefully you won’t break anything along the way.
Joe: Oh don’t say that.
Vanessa: Good luck. Thanks for watching.
