Early summer Motorhome holidays in the south of France

in France

Antibes South of FranceWhether it’s your first motorhome trip abroad or you are an experienced motorhomer in Europe, the lure of the French Riviera as a holiday destination is undeniable. The resorts of Nice, Antibes and Cannes offer a wide variety of beautiful beaches to suit all tastes, a mild climate with many hours of sunshine plus fabulous food and wine.

Yes, you can spend a lot of money in the south of France if you want to but with a motorhome you don’t need to!  If you can travel before the high season period you will be able to take advantage of lower prices on the campsites and avoid some of the crowds. Camping du Pylone in Antibes consistently gains positive reviews from UK visitors for its on-site facilities and entertainment. This campsite is well positioned to take advantage of the cheap public transport links between Nice, Antibes and Cannes (local buses 1€ per trip).  You might want to use the buses rather than moving your motorhome off-site for each daily excursion.  If you prefer quieter campsites for your motorhome holidays, with more basic amenities you might consider staying further inland in a camping municipal (campsites open to everyone and run by the local council) or on a farm campsite.

Besides its beaches and busy harbours the French Riviera has a wealth of cultural attractions for the discerning holiday-maker.  The artist Pablo Picasso lived and worked in and around Antibes after the Second World War and the Musée Picasso in the fort at Antibes has a permanent display of paintings, drawings and ceramics he created there.  Henri Matisse lived and worked in Nice from 1917 to 1954; the museum dedicated to his work is at Cimiez on the outskirts of Nice, while you can also visit the chapel he decorated at Saint-Paul-de-Vence.

Once you have worked up an appetite head to the older part of Nice and the Marché des Fleurs (flower market) area where it’s possible to enjoy some classic Niçoise cooking at unpretentious prices.  Ask for a carafe of vin de maison rather than a bottle of wine, enjoy and then catch the local bus back to your campsite.
