Back in July we had an excellent motorhome hire holiday in Cornwall, we were based at Gunvenna Touring Caravan & Camping Park, St Minver, Wadebridge, Cornwall PL27 6QN (Tel: 01208 862405). This is an excellent site on the B3314 which is the road that links and gives access to, some of my favourite places in North Cornwall. So how delighted was I to see this area on the TV and newspapers when the prime minister and his wife chose the name Endellion as a middle name for their daughter. Here’s an article I wrote about The Name Endellion:
I’m going to predict the popularity of the name Endellion to rise throughout the 21st century, which is something I am very happy about. This is mainly because I have just had a delightful holiday at Trelights in North Cornwall and the nearest villages to Trelights are Port Isaac and St Endellion.
Of course the name was made famous shortly after the birth of a baby girl to David Cameron and his wife Samantha on Tuesday 24th August 2010. They now have a daughter with the full name of Florence Rose Endellion Cameron. Their decision to name their daughter as such, came about when they were on holiday in North Cornwall, very near the village of St Endellion. The name of the village and civil parish, actually comes from Saint Endelienta who was a Cornish saint of the 5th and 6th century.
The history of Saint Endelienta is a bit sketchy, but it is believed that she was the daughter of the Welsh King Brychan. She travelled from South Wales to North Cornwall to assist her siblings in converting the locals to Christianity. Legend has it that she was the goddaughter of King Arthur.
It is believed that Saint Endelienta spent much of her time at nearby Trenteny, where she lived as a hermit with just a cow for company. She lived solely on the milk from the cow and water from two wells. The story goes even more strange as when her cow trespassed on to the land of The Lord of Trenteny he killed the cow. Her Godfather King Arthur then took his revenge on The Lord of Trentey and killed him, but when she found out about this she was unhappy, so brought him back to life!
Certainly at the time of writing the name Endellion is not in the most popular 1000 names used in the UK, but I think that is probably going to change. Maybe the more major change will be to look at names of tiny villages near where babies are born as inspiration for unusual middle names.
You may have also noticed that the press photographs of David and Samantha shortly before the birth were taken at another place I have mentioned before, Daymer Bay. Anyway this has all helped me for my new found love of North Cornwall. Why not hire a motorhome and come and check it out?
