About Camping in Austria

There are roughly 500 camp sites in Austria, all of which may be entered without any major formalities, approximately 160 of these sites are equipped for winter camping. Reductions for children are available at most sites, and also for members of FICC, AIT and FIA upon presentation of the "International Camping Card". It is advisable to take along the camping carnet (customs document). Fees are charged based on the usual international scale for parking caravans, motorbikes and cars. The parking of caravans without a traction vehicle on or beside the public highways ( including motorway parking areas ) is strictly prohibited. Caravans with a traction vehicle can be parked beside the public highways, if the parking regulations are observed. Some of the mountain roads are closed for caravans.

Note: When camping in private grounds, permission from the landowner, police and municipal council is required.

The smaller sites in Austria have excellent facilities. Line voltage is 220 Volt. The current can vary between 4 and 16 amperes at the camping sites and an increasing number of camping sites have CEE- connections. Common international brands of camping gas cylinders can usually be exchanged at the camping sites.

Austria - Mobile Homes and Trailers

A Carnet de Passage (customs document) is not a requirement for mobile homes.

Expressway toll - An additional expressway toll sticker is not required for mobile homes, the toll sticker on the towing vehicle is valid for both. Trailers (over 3.5 tons) pay the same rate as passenger cars. Overnight stays in trailers outside of the camping sites is, except for Vienna, Tirol and protected rural areas, permitted. (Subject to eventual regional restrictions). But, the setting up of camping equipment (i.e. setting up tables and chairs) is not permitted.

Some regions and areas in Austria have a parking prohibition for trailers (information available at the Communal Administrative Office or the Police). l
