As I write this, I am sitting in my awning on a fairly warm night at the end of April at Camping Vinaros on the fantastic Costa del Azahar just 2km from the Catalan/Valencia border in the Comunidad de Valencia. We have been coming to this cam site since 2002 and we just love it. One of the things that I used to love was the free and unlimited internet access, but it has changed:
- 2001-2003 there was just a PC connected to the net that anyone could use.
- 2004 there was a NetGear router installed that could be connected to with a 128bit WEP key for anyone staying at the camp site. You had to go up to ‘the old office’ to get it, but it was reliable and quite fast.
- 2008 in addition to the above there was ‘Free Hotspot’ installed – not brilliant but it did mean that you could pick up your emails from your caravan or motorhome without having to drag your lap top around to the main building.
- 2009 eeek! – it has all changed, now AkiWiFi have the monopoly on the site’s internet access. To be fair it actually works quite well and you can buy an unlimited pass for 25€/month or buy various hourly passes.
Personally I’m not unhappy, I can still work from my awning, which was what I always wanted!

As it happens, the night before I was about to leave I put a notice up in the toilet/shower block at Camping Vinaros saying “part used wireless internet access for sale” – I had bought a month, but only used 2 weeks.
Within minutes, Frank from Glasgow – a regular at Camping Vinaros – bought it for 10€ as he was stopping there for another two weeks.
