Christmas Breaks in England

christmas-breaks-in-englandHave you thought about getting away for Christmas? Well you could just head off to Europe, in a hired motorhome of course! Or you could explore some of the places in the UK that get just too busy in the summer. Here are a couple of ideas for Christmas Breaks in England.

Port Isaac. Well this has to be about one of the most famous coastal areas in the UK at the moment. It’s popularity mainly due to the fact that the Doc Martin TV Series is filmed there and everyone has fallen in love with the quaint town of Port Wenn (really Port Isaac) and it’s quirky folk. In real life of course Martin Clunes does not live there and the local inhabitants are quite sane, but don’t let that put you off – although you won’t be swimming in the sea at Christmas nearly all retaurants, pubs and cafes are all open as usual. It is also a lovely place and one of my favourite Christmas breaks in England.

How about London? You could base your self at the excellent campsite at Crystal Palace and enjoy London. There is so much to do at Christmas in London every year. What we love most is the way London empties on Christmas Eve when all the workers leave to see their families across the country. It’s always worth popping along to see the Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree. Trafalgar Square benefits from a huge Christmas Tree each year as a present from Norway for the country’s help during the Second World War. The tree is usually over 20 meters high and 50-60 years old. The tree usually stays till the Twelfth Night of Christmas, 6 January, when it is taken down to be chipped and composted.
When? The lights are switched on in the evening on the first Thursday in December.

Do you think that motorhomes have nothing to do with Christmas breaks in England? Too cold? Not so, all modern motorhomes are fully winterized with blown air central heating, so being cold is not a problem.
