The rain in The French Alps has finally stopped
Since we came home from the fantastic Camping Vinaros in the Costa del Azahar area of Spain we have been sadly dissappointed by the weather ‘at home’. We live in Briancon in the Haute Alpes (05) department in the Southern French Alps. Normally by now the last traces of the winter snow are disappearing (we live at 1300m and the mountains go up to 2800m) and spring flowers are popping up everywhere.
However, it wasn’t the spring we were expecting; we drove back in torrential rain last Saturday and it didn’t stop raining until this morning. Apparantly there has been 3 weeks of rain more or less and real heavy too. Villeneuve (Serre Chevalier 1400) is a mess at the moment, there have been diggers digging away day and night to try and stop the Guisane river diverting itself.
There have been numerous accidents related to the intense and high river flow, sadly a kayaker met his death a few days ago, I even heard that some guy had fallen off a bridge whilst taking some photos and has not been found yet.
Anyway, by now the weather should be looking much better, it hasn’t rained since this morning – so I am hopeful the weather will steadily get better. This last winter was a superb one for snow and Serre Chevalier enjoyed an excellent ski season, but this May has been one of the worst ones ever.
I haven’t seen as many motorhomes as I do normally at this time of year, which just shows one of the main advantages about a motorhome holiday: you can just follow the sunshine and go where you please.
