Whitecroft Farm, Strines, Stockport

Have you ever heard of   Strines?  There’s actually two places of that name, one in Yorkshire on the outskirts of Sheffield and the other is situated at the very edge of Stockport, right on the border where Cheshire meets Derbyshire on the B6101 road between Marple and New Mills.  It lies in the picturesque Goyt Valley on the edge of the Peak District.

Strines, Stockport is a fabulous little place with only about 350 inhabitants and has a Camping and Caravanning club CL (Certified Location) site on Whitecroft Farm, in the valley.

The village has a small church, a combined Post Office and really well stocked General Store, and you will find everything you need including newspapers. Strines also has two great country pubs within 10 minutes walking distance of the camp site.  The Royal Oak and The Sportsman are different in character but very friendly places having a good selection of beers and decent food at reasonable prices.  There are many more country pubs within a short walking distance.

So what more could you ask for?  Well actually there is more.  Numerous walks of any distance you want, as the place is ideally situated to walk for miles if you choose or just short ambles up the hillsides or over to the Peak Forest canal if you fancy.  I can guarantee you stunning views in every direction.  Day tickets to fish in the Millponds, which are close to the site, are available from the Post Office.  Mellor and New Mills golf courses are very close to hand if golf is your game. Retail therapy is nearby as both Marple and New Mills have an excellent range of independent shops with goods to suit all tastes.  The railway station is tucked away up the hillside where you can take a train to Manchester within 25 minutes or Sheffield in an hour.  So everyone is catered for in such a delightful spot that is so quiet and peaceful.

So what are you waiting for?  A few days in Strines is a delightful way to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of work and traffic.  Give it a try and I don’t think you will be disappointed.
