Alcohol, Motorhomes and The Law

I seem to have sparked off a bit of a discussion, by suggesting that a motorhome may be a useful vehicle at Christmas to avoid any drunken driving.

Some readers thought that I was implying having a full on session and then driving home bleary-eyed and hungover in the morning, this is NOT what I meant. I was more talking about having a few glasses of wine with your Christmas dinner and perhaps the odd port with a bit of cheese! In this case, the best thing to do is to go nowhere, I believe. However…to be on the safe side…

Let me just clarify some things that I should have said:

  • You should never inhabit (or be in charge of) a motorhome while intoxicated, if it is not on private land.
  • If you intend to drive after a day when you have been drinking, then you must make sure that you have allowed sufficient time for your body to be free of alcohol.

Please note that some countries such as Sweden and indeed certain parts of countries, such as France’s Hautes Alpes (05) department have a zero tolerance to alcohol as far as driving is concerned.

john hickmott @ 8:14 pm

i understood what you meant as all full grown up people are aware of if they are fit to drive the next morning,so i think it was a good idea of yours. regards john

Rick Lomas @ 8:20 pm

Thanks for the comment John. I’m just trying to make sure no one thought I was being careless with any of my suggestions.

Lise Guthrie @ 9:21 pm

I think whoever took it out of context must just have misunderstood. There was certainly no ambiguity from your side. If this website had to be created by you, just to clarify what is already clear, that is a shame.

I do not drink alcohol anyway so I am safe.

Have a great day and God Bless.

TERRY @ 9:48 pm

Those of us whom abide by the law knew your meaning and understood it , but for those whom did not your quick response should have stopped them in their tracks, (so to speak)lets all have a joyous Christmas,. Terry.

Rick Lomas @ 9:53 pm

No worries Lise, whenever you mention alcohol+driving it stirs up lots of emotions and quite rightly so. Anyway thanks for the comment.

Hi Rick,

I think your idea of sleeping in a motorhome to get away from the reletives when you’ve had enough is a great plan! As only adults can drive, I think whoever took your email out of context is silly.

Rick Lomas @ 11:11 pm

Great to hear from you Hellen, thanks for the comment. I always get that bit just after ‘The Queens Speech’, where everyone watches James Bond or something and I just feel like having a lie down for a while. At this point you could always say “I’m just going to check the ‘gas connections’ in the motorhome, have a little sleepy and then appear at 5pm for the turkey sandwiches.
For those of us with kids we can just say we’ll have to put them to bed in the motorhome, but we can’t leave them alone, so …see you in the morning, we’re off too…bye……!

until you sent this Rick, it had not occurred to me that you were trying to encourage irresponsible behaviour during the festive season (or any other time come to that)some people can just get the wrong end of the stick!

Rick Lomas @ 11:02 am

Thanks for the comment Derek

Hi Rick

I just assumed you knew my relatives. i.e. If you go anywhere near them you’d need a skinfull be it Christmas or not. In fact just thinking about them has made me want to go the pu……. (computer switched off).

Rick Lomas @ 6:21 pm

Richard that is Brilliant! I’m a bit like that with my inlaws…infact thinking about it the whole of Christmas to me is all about trying to avoid all the things I am supposed to be doing:)
